Solar Electricity - Installation & Servicing Company
Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels are arrays of cells containing a material that converts solar radiation into direct current electricity and attach to your roof or walls similar to solar thermal (hot water) panels. Although initial capital cost is greater than solar thermal, PV can provide greater long-term CO2 and cost savings as you can sell your electricity back to the national grid. Visit the Energy Savings Trust webpage for more information.
In addition to traditional PV panels, photovoltaic cells are also available as roof tiles or can be designed to look like glass for use on your conservatory.
Here are some important questions to ask if you are considering solar panels:
- Do you have a sunny place for installation? Ideal locations are south facing surfaces (roof or wall).
- Structural suitability. Can the surface take the weight of your system? Solar panels can be heavy especially if the solar panel is placed on top of existing roof tiles. We can identify this in our survey.
- Do you require planning permission? In England and Scotland, you are not obliged to have planning permission for most small and medium sized domestic solar electricity systems. In Wales and Northern Ireland, you will need to get planning permission before installing a solar electricity system.
One of the great advantages of PV is that maintenance is usually minimal. We recommend that a simple periodic maintenance routine is undertaken that includes cleaning the panel surface and ensuring surrounding trees don't overshadow the installation.
